Europe needs to rethink its migration policies in the wake of December’s terror attack at a Christmas market in Berlin, Italy’s Lega Nord leader Matteo Salvini told German newspaper Die Welt in an interview published Tuesday.

The mass sexual assaults that took place in Cologne on New Year’s Eve 2015 were a “warning” that went unheeded and led to the Berlin attack, in which a 24-year-old Tunisian man drove a truck into a crowded Christmas market, killing 12, Salvini said.

Salvini does not yet know far-right Alternative for Germany leader Frauke Petry personally, he said, but admires the party, calling it a “fresh and unexpected phenomenon” at the center of Europe.

The Lega Nord leader, a proud Trump supporter and advocate for tightened immigration, spoke of a “culture war” in Europe. The problem, he said, is not with individuals but with Islam itself, a religion he claims is incompatible with European societies.

Europe, Salvini said, has never been “softer,” and “the Continent is losing its values, it is lacking in security, it is losing its identity and has no pride any more.”

“We are under attack and must decisively kick out those people who do not have a legal claim to residence here,” Salvini said.

“If you want to live in peace,” he said, “you have to prepare for war.”

Asked how he would fix Europe’s migration crisis, Salvini suggested investing in agreements with Mali, Nigeria, Gambia and Senegal to stem the flow of economic migrants instead of “throwing money out the window” by housing them in Italy.
